5 Tips for Adjusting to Invisalign Braces

Todd Allen

Invisalign braces can straighten teeth effectively, but getting used to wearing them can take a little time. Here are some tips that can help you during this adjustment period.

1. Wear the Aligners as Much as Possible

Invisalign braces work most effectively to straighten your teeth when you use them for as many hours of the day as possible. Ideally, you should remove your aligners only for meals and cleaning. Try to avoid taking the braces out for long periods, as this allows your teeth to relax back into their old alignment.

2. Practice Your Speech When You First Get the Aligners

The unfamiliar sensation of having a thin layer of plastic covering your teeth can cause you to lisp or stumble over your words a little. Most people overcome this problem relatively quickly. You might like to practice speaking for a while before you meet up with your friends or family so you don't have to worry about embarrassing yourself.

3. Always Carry a Case

To protect your aligners from staining, you should avoid eating or drinking anything other than water while you are wearing your Invisalign braces. To protect your aligners and keep them clean, always carry a case around with you in case you want to eat or drink anything. You might find it helpful to purchase multiple cases so you can keep one in each of your bags.

4. Soak Aligners While You Eat

While you are having your main meal of the day, take the opportunity to soak your Invisalign braces in a stain removal solution. This simple action helps to prevent stains from building up on the aligners, so that they stay clear, allowing the natural whiteness of your teeth to shine through. Rinse the aligners before you place them back into your mouth.

5. Switch to New Aligners Before Bed

The protocol involves switching to new braces once every few weeks to keep the pressure on your teeth constant as they shift into their new alignment. New braces can feel quite strange initially, as they typically feel a little tighter on the teeth than the old set. A good way to give your teeth a chance to get used to the new level of pressure is to put in the new aligners before you go to bed. By the next morning, you should have adjusted to the new braces and be ready to face the day.
